Travis to be arraigned in Washington for draft conspiracy

Edward Travis of Raleigh and Halifax will be arraigned August 14 in Washington on the government's charge of conspiring against the selective draft law. He expects to remain for his preliminary hearing and plans to consult multiple lawyers led by James Poll of Raleigh. Other named associates Leon Green and Selm Joseph are also due to be arraigned.

Submarine Sinks Nine Fishing Schooners Near Nantucket

Nantucket Mass reports a German submarine sank nine fishing schooners off George's Bank about sixty miles from the island. The auxiliary Helen Murley rescued four survivors and others were picked up by fast naval scout boats and six auxiliary vessels. Survivors were taken to an Atlantic port as patrols searched for more.

Allied advance nears Nesle after gains on Somme front

British forces push toward Nesle six miles southeast of Chaulnes with cavalry operating near town. Allied units smash rear German resistance, as retreating troops flee in disorder along the Somme line. In North Carolina the coast guard station at Smith Island reports a submarine released poison gas causing six men to be overcome, with no fatalities. An editor and family visited Mrs. Frank Pell’s home in Genevaville for an afternoon gathering.

Governor Bickett designates Monday, August 19 as State Jewish Relief Day to raise $100,000 for suffering Jews in war zones. Watermelon Treat Hosts Editor and Family Night

The editor and family accepted hospitality from Mr. and Mrs. David Welborn on Tuesday evening for a watermelon treat. Avery Little, 12, of Thomasville Orphanage, was killed by a freight train near Lexington on Sunday, and a companion was injured. The two boys were part of a group traveling toward Salisbury that morning. Mrs. J. P. Crowder and family are visiting Blackstone, Virginia, for a several day stay.

The rain Friday afternoon offered relief from the heat. The Lutheran Sunday school held its annual picnic at Hayworth's Mineral Springs. Miss Clara Holmes Gurley will wed Oliver L. Causey of St. Louis on Sept. 11. The bride is the daughter of Franz and Mrs Gurley. the groom is the late Oliver Causey’s son. Miss Margaret Mungo visits Elkin and White Sulphur Springs. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Burns and family attended N. E. Jordan’s Greensboro reunion. all children and grandchildren were present except one in camp.

Southern Car Co Plant Sold at Trustee Sale

The Southern Car Co plant appraised near 200000 was sold Thursday afternoon. E D Broadhurst of Greensboro bid 54500 for the whole business including material machinery and 15 acres of land. A ten percent raise may be declared upon it. The plant was well equipped for street car manufacture and had been thriving before closing, with war work suitability noted.

Negro Selectmen Called for Camp Greene Training

Beginning August 22 the all colored selectmen from High Point will be sent to Camp Greene. In total 29 men are notified to report under the latest call No 1134.

Casualties of the Past Week Reported

The weekly US casualties total 3,758 with breakdowns for Killed in action 167, died of wounds 14, died of accident 1, died of disease 2, wounded 71, and other determinations. The Thursday and Friday lists provide the detailed figures.

Heat Too Oppressive and They Quit at High Point

Workers at several factories in High Point walked off in the heat during a spell of oppressive temperatures. Owners supported the men, noting the extreme heat made conditions untenable. The episode marks a rare collective action in the area as heat affected labor.

With the French Army in Frat at noon August 10, Montdidier is tightly pressed by converging Allied attacks from north and south. The Montdidier Chaulnes railway is knocked out, severing a key supply line. London reports eleven German divisions destroyed and unlikely to reform soon, while new divisions rush to principal arteries of communication where Allied cavalry and tanks hold strong.

Montdidier Falls to French First Army in sector shift

British war bulletin says Montdidier and surrounding areas south of Month were captured by the French First Army operating in the Alber-Montdidier area. Prisoners and large quantities of material were reported, with lines from Lihons to Friesnoy Les Roye and Conchy Les Pots noted as part of the advance. The communiqué claims the French moved into the area before midday, increasing prisoner counts and material captured.

Deaths in the Past Week report two local burials

Dolomon Craven died Saturday of Brights disease at 70 and was buried Sunday at Spring Hill. He was survived by his wife, four sons, and seven brothers. Jesse E. Peele died Monday night in the Highland Cotton Mill settlement at 49 and left a wife and several children. Remains sent to Mt Airey for interment.

San Francisco August 14 A man named Jack Charles Read tried to enlist in the U S Marines but was rejected for being fifteen pounds overweight He vowed to lose the fat in fifteen days through a physician prescribed diet and exercises He quipped Shylock had nothing on the Marines and that they wanted fifteen pounds Read also noted a pleasant call from W J Frazier of Rt 2.

Coble’s Brother Claussen Dies of Typhoid in Claussen

William Claussen Jr. of Claussen South Carolina, brother of Mrs C P Coble of this city, died at his home last week from typhoid fever. An influential farmer, he owned a large farm and was the eldest son. He is survived by his parents three sisters and two brothers, one a physician serving in France. Funeral services were held at the family home and interment followed in the family cemetery on the Claussen farm.

Tragic death of Maggie Ellington child age 10 months

Maggie Elizabeth Ellington ten month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Ellington died Thursday morning at 705 Mangum Avenue. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 pm from Welch Memorial church conducted by Rev H H Robbins pastor South Main M E church. Interment followed at Springfield cemetery.

Death of a Young Woman Esther Cox Funeral at Flag Springs

The funeral of Miss Esther Cox, 15, was held Friday at Flag Springs near Ashboro after she died August 8 in her city home following a short typhoid illness. Survived by sisters Lillie, Aosie, and Cox, and Mrs. C F Williams, plus brothers Cooper in the U.S. Army, Walter, Albert, and Theodore Cox. Rev Thomas Andrews of Ashboro officiated. burial at Flag Springs cemetery.

Man Falls 160 Feet In Tarrytown Accident

Joseph Kinnard of Tarrytown New York fell 160 feet striking a guard wire and turning a somersault before landing at his feet. He later commented that he did not expect to come down this way.
