Odell Brown ten year old nephew of the editor ran away from the Children's Home at Winston last Saturday and came here. He says he was mistreated his clothes shabby and he shows the fear of a frightened deer. Well Known Man Dead At 57 In High Pointer Miller

Alphonso Hacey longtime High Pointer and miller died Thursday after a yearlong illness. He was 57. Wife and six children survive. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. James A. Clark. Interment followed in Oakwood cemetery.

Major fire damages downtown stores on North Main Street

A Friday evening blaze originating in the rear of the old John Cecil building on North Main caused about forty thousand dollars of damage. Defective wiring was blamed as water pressure hindered early suppression. H. A. Moffitt’s general merchandise store suffered near total water and smoke loss, with Loflin’s jewelry and millinery and Loflin & Brockway’s undertaking business also heavily affected. Firefighters and soldiers aided in moving goods. by 7:30 the fire was under control and stock was relocated to safer quarters.

Fire damages Brigg home on Johnson Street

A Thursday afternoon fire heavily damaged the home of J Gurney Brigg on Johnson Street, likely from lightning, with an estimated loss of 1500 dollars partly insured. Later that night a false alarm from box 21 was traced to a prank.

Odd Tale Of Tapscott In Old Trinity College

During the Civil War era in Old Trinity a peculiar man named Tapscott from Tallahassee, Florida drew attention for eccentric behavior. He finished college in 1854 as the sole graduate of that year, faded into gloom, and eventually vanished from the town. After a long wandering period he was believed to have died, but a well rescue revealed only an old sock. years later he reappeared as a lawyer in Florida, paying debts and returning to favor. Arthur Quate a white man was fined 25 dollars and costs for placing his arms around a young woman during her walk home with a young man while intoxicated and disorderly. The total fines and costs came to 47.20 dollars.

Lightning strikes kill driver and four mules on road

Last Saturday on the Shelby Fallston road a bolt killed the Stamey Bros. driver of Fallston and the four mule team he guided. He had long worked for the firm and was en route from Shelby to Fallston with merchandise when death came, leaving the team as well.
