City schools gain six new teachers at council meeting

Six new teachers were elected by the City Council for City Schools including Annie Laurie Council Mary Wilson Edith Bradshaw Irma Tapp Marco Goley and A E Frazier. City Physician McCain salary raised to twenty dollars monthly.

Springfield meeting noted with August 14 program

The 125th year of the Springfield monthly meeting will be observed at the 8th annual meeting August 14. Dr. Thos. Newlin and others will speak. The notice also lists numerous local visits and travels including Greensboro Pan-American dinner attendees and various family movements.

Changed Schedule Adjusts Southern Railway Trains

The main line timetable on the Southern Railway took effect Sunday. No 35 now follows the former No 48 timing while No 43 runs near the former No 35 schedule. No 46 waits for the Raleigh Patriot train and Greensboro arrival to align.

Business Picking Up At Southern Chair and Welch Furniture

The factories report better business with gains at Southern Chair Wrenn-Columbia and Welch Furniture. R W Moldin of Chase City VA and his son Reitzel visited Wednesday to consult Dr Burrus for a watermelon seed lodged in Moldin's windpipe. The seed was removed successfully and the Moldins returned home at noon.

Guilford County Canning Club Tomatoes and Beans Sale

Miss Grace Schaeffer heads the Guilford county canning clubs and announces that the girls will sell tomatoes and beans in Greensboro and High Point if local support is strong. Calls will go out soon to women, hotels, boarding houses and colleges in the two cities.

Greensboro Officials Question Rankin Report Details

Greensboro city commissioners did not accept Dr. Rankin’s interview with newspaper men during his state health board visit to inspect conditions. Mayor Murphy says Rankin exaggerated them. His official report will be filed soon and awaited.

No Court This Month In Greensboro

Greensboro lawyers again set aside a legislature act and delayed the term of court planned to begin in two weeks. No reason was given beyond delayed scheduling. over five hundred cases remain on the calendar, leaving litigants eager for court action this month.

In a probate filing J W Huger, late fertilizer magnate, leaves about 1 million dollars to his wife and three children on condition they remain in the South. If they move, the inheritance is forfeited. Huger died at Skyville North Carolina a few days ago.

Young man dies in Salisbury migrant’s illness

Rover Thomas aged 21 arrived from Salisbury and collapsed at the passenger station. Dr S S Coe attended after midnight, Thomas was sent home and died at about three o'clock Monday morning. Acute indigestion is listed as the cause. He was a son of Mr and Mrs J M Thomas of Russell Street and well liked.

Dr. Hugh McCain purchased the Dr. G. F. Duncan interest in High Point Hospital and will co-own the popular facility with Dr. J. T. Burrus. Dr. Duncan sold due to health reasons and moved to his former home in Sparta.

Death of Little Phyliss Shelton at age two

The child Lester Phyliss Shelton died July 30 at the West Green Street home of Mr. and Mrs. J M Shelton. She was a Cradle roll member of the First Christian church of High Point and is mourned by her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. G W Mannings of Gratna Virginia.

Lightning Strikes Homes Near City Cause Fire and Injuries

Lightning hit Dennis Black's home five miles southeast, burning the house and contents. Black and daughter Fannie were shocked with Fannie burned and saved, a blue streak down her body. A fuse and meter at High Point Show Case plant were also damaged later that afternoon.

Seventy five Guilford county men named as special veniremen for the trial of Ida Bell Warren Samuel P Christy and Clifton Long in the Winston murder case.
