Those Called for Examination Next Week

The local exemption board notified the first 200 eligibles to appear before the examining board on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday one third each day. Dr Hiatt and Dr Jackson conduct the exam with Dr Stanton to decide any dissatisfaction. Ninety seven men are wanted from the 200 enrolled, others to be called the following week if needed.

Well Fed Geese Bring High Prices in Germany

Washington reports from the Food Administration show soaring food costs in Germany with fats and fowls expensive. Well fed geese fetch 11 to 19 dollars each while goose fat sells at 5.36 dollars a pound and fresh fowls reach 1.01 dollars per pound. An egg ration in Hamburg limits one egg per person per week.

Near Riot Erupts as George Barksdale Spurs Violence in Danville

In Danville Virginia on July 31 a Black man named George Barksdale offered to whip soldiers one by one on Union street. He was stoned and fled to a poolroom where a crowd of soldiers was dispersed by police. Three tobacco warehousemen warned he would return with a pistol. Barksdale was jailed and Mayor Wooding ordered full evidence gathered for the case.

Record for marriages smashed in New York

New York July 31 164 marriages were performed breaking the previous record as many bridesgrooms were of military age. Licenses issued reached 294 but clerks had expected more due to lines outside. United States marshal Thomas D. McCarthy and deputies barred any draft age men without registration cards from entering the bureau.

Soldiers Farewell Supper Tonight for Company M

The Main Street school lawn hosts a farewell supper for Company M this evening funded by the Commercial Club and the Industrial Department. Fried chicken lemonade and ice cream will be served. Rev. Thousands of Physicians Needed for New American Armies

Washington July 29 The War Department says fully 24 000 physicians or two out of every nine of military age will be required for the new American armies plus 120 000 enlisted men for the medical corps. Half to be ready by October 1 with 200 a day entering camps at Ft. Riley Fort Benjamin Harrison Fort Oglethorpe Fort Des Moines and Allentown three months training for officers and men. About 13 500 in training now. The system mobilizes 22 to 55 year old physicians and draws from each community in proportion to available numbers to ensure protection.

Rapid Lumber Shipment Policy Improves War Effort

Washington July 30 The Railroads War Board has adopted a policy to move empty freight cars between line owners to speed lumber delivery from Southern forests to army cantonments and shipyards. Lumber for cantonments comes from the Carolinas Alabama Florida Mississippi Louisiana and Arkansas. Two extra cars have been allocated to the lines in these states. Mississippi and Alabama supply most of the lumber for new wooden ships, and the extra cars will hasten lumber to the shipyards.
