A regional report notes Randall County enjoyed good crops on well-tiled farms despite a drier season. It argues proper cultivation—deep plowing and regular stirring—produces harvests even with limited acreage, while overextension hurts yields.
Dr. Daniels displays a collection of photographs from the Plainview firemen convention held last month. The shots include sharp images of the local team in action and others among the group.
A Plainview delegation visits the Hale county courthouse to inspect furnishings. County Judge Geo. A. Mayfield County Attorney KE Graham Clerk J. W. Campbell and Sheriff G. A. London examined the building and reported they were well pleased with the condition of the furnishings.
The Normal Grocery held its annual opening on the west side Saturday afternoon and evening. Cakes and coffee were served for ladies and children, cigars for men, drawing a large crowd. The store is known for handling the best and treating customers courteously, and the event reflected that reputation.
The Leader’s prize series concluded Saturday with a piano awarded to the Slover family as clock time matched the correct reading. The store earlier distributed many sets of dishes, drawing crowds to the crowded venue at four o'clock for the final drawing.
Last week featured excursion crowds who viewed land offerings with satisfaction. A number of sales were completed and several prospects expressed intent to return soon to purchase more.
Miss Drusilla Knight entertained a small group of her young friends last Friday at her parents’ Roper street home. The evening featured music recitations and games followed by dainty refreshments. Guests departed late, expressing delight with the entertainment.
Hon John H Stephens congressman from this district stopped by the Eastman home last week but was not asked to speak. He was not feeling well and is expected to return in a few weeks and will likely deliver an address.
The electric light company has extended lines east to the Normal area this week and begun serving residences in the east end. The new street lighting is expected to significantly improve conditions there.
The West Texas State Normal College will open its doors to Plains students next Tuesday morning. The faculty have prepared, reporting the building ready for work in several rooms. Registration details are unclear, but the school appears well organized and poised to be the strongest Normal college in the state once fully staffed.
The piece notes alfalfa yields of ten bushels per acre at ten dollars a bushel on Judge Lair land in Randall county. It cites two additional hay cuttings worth twelve dollars and eighty eight dollars per ton for straw from threshing. Reported yields are similar on other Randall county farms.
Mr and Mrs Geo H Hutchings returned Monday from their wedding trip to Kentucky. They report a delightful journey and a pleasant visit at Mr Hutchings former home.
The Shadowland was sold this week to M. Thomas and relocated to the Airdome. Thomas plans substantial improvements to enhance its showings and attract larger audiences.
The city schools opened with 635 pupils and a full staff led by Supt J L Redus and Principal O L Price. High school has 125 with 15 teachers, lower grades total 250 students across seven grades, and several teachers named for each grade. The sixth and seventh grades occupy the old school near the depot.
The Baraca and Philathea classes of the M. E. church will meet at the church for their regular monthly business meeting Friday night. A social session will follow after the business meeting.
Professor J. W. Reid and his wife of the Normal have moved into a new east end residence after returning from Chicago where Mr. Reid attended a summer session in the city.
The Sunday School convention drew about 100 delegates with 20 counties and 33 towns represented. Noted speakers included W N Wigginson, William C Pearce, and John M Adams. Music by Roper and North featured some of the plains finest singing. Continued on page eight.
