Canyon City leaders tout a $100000 school building and $800000 in year projects to attract enrollment and migrants. They praise the Commercial Club’s role, urge more boarding houses, a steam laundry, flour mill and ice plant, and call for broad civic unity to boost education and industry.
Henry J. Weber is presented as the News’s choice for Precinct No 1 commissioner in Canyon City. A former Illinois county commissioner and long-time school board director, he is described as a substantial farmer with broad experience in county affairs and public service.
Clyde Pete McElroy wed Miss Millie Johnson at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. M E Hawkins officiating. The bride is F A Johnson’s daughter from southwest of Canyon, the groom has long resided in Canyon area. They left by afternoon train for Mineral Wells and other eastern Texas cities and will return to settle near Canyon City.
Edward Hyatts of this city completed the city watersworks well last Friday. The well reaches 402 feet with a six inch diameter and appears to offer an inexhaustible supply. Water was found deeper than expected but the surface layers suggest ample quantity. A further test will occur after the city installs its big pump. The water is said to be of the finest quality.
A Dairy Congress is proposed for Amarillo on February 4 to promote dairy industry development. The call urges regional organization to expand creamery and poultry product markets, with aims to form local dairy groups across Texas New Mexico Oklahoma and surrounding districts.
City Council on January 25 directed the Mayor and City Attorney to prepare ordinances regulating plumbing for sewer and water systems and to appoint inspectors. It also calls for extending six inch water mains throughout the city. Final action on these items and others is set for February 1.
C L Daniels, a Randall County resident since 1908, veteran of the Spanish American War, a Chicago dental college graduate, and farmer near Canyon, announces his candidacy for Tax Assessor in the Democratic primaries. He appeals for voter support, citing duty to community and qualifications.
Mrs D K Usery travels Saturday to Stratford to visit friends and relatives. She accompanies D K Usery to Amarillo to see the show Polly of the Circus, spending the night there.
The News endorses W D Scott for county judge noting his active prosecuting experience and 14 years of teaching in Tennessee. If elected he would devote full time to duties, enforce laws impartially, and serve as ex officio superintendent of county schools, subject to Democratic primary next July.
The News endorses Will Cage as a Democratic primary candidate for Randall county Tax Assessor. Cage, an active farmer with deep knowledge of farm values, is described as a respected, capable citizen in the community.
New settlers from Iowa W. R McMurry and family and Mr. Rowe of Oskaloosa Iowa have joined Sherman County. McMurry owns land a mile and a half west of town where he will build a residence soon. He is building a barn and will begin on the house once the barn is finished.
T B Turk of Blooming Grove arrived in Canyon last Saturday and says his household goods will soon be moved into his newly completed elegant residence now ready for occupancy.
Mr and Mrs T J Cochran spent Wednesday in Amarillo observing local events and visiting area shops before returning home.
