Future of Northwest apples urged at State Horticultural meeting
Romer C Atwell of the Oregon State Horticultural Society addressed the Lewiston gathering arguing for production and distribution changes to lower living costs and expand markets. He cites 275 000 acres planted to apples in Washington Oregon and Idaho and predicts 54 000 000 boxes output at 400 boxes per acre if half never reach production. He urges marketing second grade fruit to common consumers and notes Eastern markets may grow, with emphasis on economy over fancy packing. A US investment of 375 million in Central America is noted as significant to the Northwest apple industry.
