The Iowa experiment station reports on silo types and locations with most silos outside barns. Deep concrete silos thirty to sixty feet high preserve silage better, reduce mold, and must extend foundations below the frost line.
The passage argues for outside silos connected by a passage to barns to reduce odor and improve feeding convenience. It favors round silos over square, notes stave silos’ success in Iowa, and advises on construction, airflow, and daily feed removal.
