Illinois land seizure pits farmers against state power
A decision by Secretary of the Interior Hoke Smith threatens to transfer over 20,000 acres in Like county to the State of Illinois. Valued at $300,000 to $400,000, the land includes summer resort properties along the Fox River and well improved farms. If upheld, the state will pursue current private holders in Illinois courts to recover possession, unless a settlement is reached. The move rests on ruling that a 1839 U S survey was invalid and that patented private lands do not prevent state action.
