The Tariff Not All And The Michigan Farm Sale
A Michigan farmer sold a 100 acre farm in 1864 for 100 per acre, netting 10000. He bought 10000 in 6 percent bonds, earning 600 annually, enabling him to live on labor and bond income. In 1873 the bonds switched to 4 percent due in 1907, now worth 11700. The buyer’s farm profits faded after 1873, and the farm cannot be sold for 10000, while the money now buys more than three such farms. The piece questions beyond free trade or tariff theories.
