Senator Kyle and Hunton report bribery attempt over tariff vote
Senator Hunton and Senator Kyle allege they were offered money to vote against the tariff, via Hunton’s son and Kyle’s clerk. The man, identified as Butts, is described as an unreliable figure from South Carolina now living in Dakota, with supporters denying his standing. Accounts say the price fixed was 28 000 and a Philadelphia Press claim tied the sugar trust to the Senate Finance Committee. Both senators confirm the bribe attempt but refuse to name the briber, while Hunton notes the matter was reported over a month ago and is in managers’ hands for action.
