History of Wake Forest Students Aid Fund and its origin
The article recounts the founding of the Students' Aid Fund at Wake Forest College led by J. W. Denmark. It details Denmark's 1871 arrival, fundraising efforts starting 1875, initial appeals to colleges and Baptist groups, the 1876 formation of a North Carolina association, first loans in 1876 to Barney H. Phillips, and the 1877 incorporation. It also notes influence on the later Deems Fund at New York and the push to place governance with the college trustees for stability.
