Do Your Duty and the River Bank at Last

The narrative reflects on Leonidas L. Polk and Confederate memory at Oakwood Cemetery near a hill overlooking a brook. It recalls Polk’s life, his political battles, and a series of monuments to notable North Carolina figures, including Chief Justice Smith and Pearson, with lines from Polk’s final speeches about duty and mortality, ending with contemplations on his death and the hereafter.
