A mob repeatedly sought his lynching and again demanded him from the jailer. Miss Anderson asked that he not be lynched as Christmas would be a dreadful memory for her. Citizens urged following the law. A committee was appointed to decide, and the mob agreed to abide by its ruling. Hard Times for the Chicago Packers Amid Slump
Receipts of hogs fall sharply and five thousand workers are laid off as Chicago packing houses run at under half capacity since December. November hog receipts show a drop of 1.54 million versus 1891, with Chicago totals down 780,000 from last year. Packers foresee no near relief, citing wet springs and rising hogs prices but stagnant meat prices, and expect continued losses for months.
