Critique of W. Duke’s tobacco trust and its farmer impact
A letter from Raveien North Carolina dated January 17 1897 attacks W Duke for building a tobacco trust that raises prices paid by farmers and harms their livelihoods. The writer argues Duke’s philanthropy to Trinity College enables poverty among workers and calls for breaking the trust to improve farmer profits and education.

Tribute to a devoted church member and pastor's reminiscence
The obituary recalls a long life of faith and service in Currituck and nearby communities. Sister Owens joined the M E Church in 1833 and Baxter's Grove in 1869, died after 63 years of steady church work, and is remembered for kindness, charitable spirit, and steady devotion to her family and church. A former pastor writes of their close ties and promises of reunion. The note ends with a farmer’s proverb and an appeal for five hundred new subscribers this week.
