Narrow Escape Over Threats From County Officials
In a letter from Bertie county, a man describes a fearsome exchange with a county commissioner who drew a pistol to compel support for political figures and pressures to quit engaging with The Progressive Farmer. He mentions threats, personal strife with his wife Betsy, and a plan to run for Congress in 1896, ending with a vow to seek peace elsewhere and a plea to editor Bilkins.
