Remarks on Present Soil Conditions and Fertilization

An article from the agricultural presses argues that soils must be studied to restore fertility lost from repeated cropping. It explains soil formation, the essential nutrients, and the need to fertilize with nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash. It warns that return of nutrients is necessary and promotes mixing barnyard manure with fertilizers for crops. It also notes grinding corn for hog feed to improve efficiency when corn prices are favorable.

After Thoughts Correspondence of the Progressive Farmer

The piece argues that the 1896 defeat of the Democrats shows a protest against a self appointing political majority. It urges vigilance, reform, and unity for a pure government and fair ballot, warning against educational and property qualifications and calling for nominating virtuous leaders. The writer urges action in the present and loyalty to cooperative, non-partisan reform.
