Col Jim Long remembered for whiskey bill remark and politics

Col Jim Long of Cabarrus county died at Concord. In 1886 he was nominated as a compromise by Democrats, helping pass a county road law and proposing a whisky examiner bill. During a late night speech he provoked the gallery with a crude remark about the women, the bill failed, and he made lifelong enemies among the ladies. Peace to his ashes.
