Slavery debate fuels South North rift over Stowe Abolition
A Southern reader attacks Harriet Beecher Stowe and Uncle Tom's Cabin in The Progressive Farmer, arguing abolitionist books harmed the South and demanding a new abolitionist line to counter poverty, monopolies, and postwar woes. The letter calls for renewed Southern leadership, warns of economic collapse, and condemns Northern misrepresentations of Southern life. It also details Alliance missionary tours across North Carolina with meetings in Salisbury to Morganton, Marion, and Gastonia, praising local leaders and urging steady support for the Farmers' Alliance and lecture system.
