Oldest mill in the south from postwar era revived siege tale
An 18th century mill near Town Creek, built shortly after the Revolutionary War by Nehemiah Webb, stands as a four story stone and log structure. It housed early steamage tests by John Fitch and later ground grist for settlers. The site saw a 1562 battle siege when Gen. John Morgan’s raiders trapped federal troops inside the valley mill for 45 hours, with bullets pitting the walls. Over time deforestation dried springs, reducing water power and ending active use.
