Narrow Escape From Molasses Death for Hagerstown Lad

A nine year old son of a wholesale grocer in Hagerstown Maryland nearly drowned after jumping between hogsheads of molasses. He slipped into the thick liquid, fought to keep his mouth and nose above the surface, and was rescued after a passerby heard his cries. He was shaved to remove molasses from his hair, and his clothes were ruined. The incident inspired a nearby farmer to remark on the dangers and dangers of farm life. A second vignette shows a farmer reflecting on danger and independence. A church in Washington features a tree used as a steeple with a bell hung from a chopped trunk. Additional brief items include jokes about a hired hand misbehaving and a mock courtship inquiry.
