War at sea and land battles fuel Spanish American conflict
Monday reports describe Dewey's Asiatic Squadron engaging Admiral Montejo’s Spanish fleet after nightfall. The Olympia and Raleigh led a ferocious assault in Manila Bay, sinking or scattering much of the Spanish force. Provisional government plans for Manila and Cuba invasion surfaced, with Dewey moving to bombard Manila and land troops aided by insurgents. Reports from Tuesday to Wednesday mention bombardment, rumors of Manila’s capture, Cuban invasion plans, and mounting violence across Spain and Cuba.
