Cabinet War Stories From Grant Garfield Years
An 19th century New York dinner recounts cabinet formation under Grant and Garfield. It details Elihu Washburns brief tenure, Hamilton Fish near appointment, a cipher telegram, and Fish’s unexpected ascent after Washburn’s failed push. Garfield's tense pact with Morton and Conkling over the Navy post is also narrated.
