Washington Letter on Speech Speed and Political Figures
A Washington Letter discusses stenographers' view of rapid speech in Congress, noting Representative Lew of Washington reportedly speaks at 800 words per minute while others average around 220. It covers Col. Pat Hawes of Nebraska, Senator Platt's updated appearance after marriage, and various humorous and political anecdotes from the capital, including remarks on newspaper influence and the culture of public figures.
