A Broadside from the People's Demands urges opposition to Bland and Blanchard while denouncing signal boosters for reform as the Illinois style. The piece critiques the Sunday law, silver coinage plans, and calls for strong anti-press actions, aiming to steer readers against the current legislature and party alignments in the state.
In a dramatic Illinois Democratic convention, John P. Altgeld was re nominated by acclamation amid a rousing silver platform. Delegates condemned President Cleveland’s federal intervention in the Chicago strike and endorsed Altgeld for continued leadership while pledging support for bimetallic coinage and opposition to the McKinley Tariff.
The piece urges uniting Republicans and Democrats on bimetalism to elect McKinley, warns of gold-bug schemes to wreck the nation, and cites figures like Cleveland, Morgan, and bankers. It critiques single gold standard advocates and emphasizes public-spirited reform against financial interests.
The text notes that the people should and doubtless will vote against the proposed constitution, signaling strong opposition. The remark frames the public stance as inevitable and decisive in the upcoming referendum.
