A historical analysis shows 24 states containing the bulk of foreign born residents delivered McKinley 205 electoral votes and a net popular plurality of 1,112,181. The German and Eng Neh groups form key blocs. the foreign vote largely explains McKinley’s nationwide plurality while Bryan’s gains were limited to smaller regions.
