mob drags Mayfield man to courthouse yard and hangs him
In Mayfield Kentucky a mob of 300 to 400 citizens seized Richard Allen after his arrest for burglary. They hanged him at the courthouse yard, following a previous hanging of Jim Stone. Allen confessed to belonging to a burglary gang and named others. Holmes was acquitted. The mob, while orderly, claimed summary justice was the only remedy to stop burglaries. Probing after other gang members, the mob was reported to have gone after the rest.
