Three men burned to death and another likely fatally burned in a West Third Street sailors' lodging house fire. Several residents were seriously injured as flames trapped occupants in beds. Only one lodger escaped via the staircase, with others rescued from windows and the roof by firefighters.
The Oceanic Steamship Company steamer Alameda ran aground in fog at Fort Point San Francisco Bay while en route to Honolulu. The vessel lanks badly and settles at the stern as passengers are evacuated by launches. multiple tugs respond though winds are light.
London reports Alderman Walter Vaughan Morgan elected lord mayor for the year. The septuagenarian banker bachelor, educated at Bluecoat, is a prominent Free Mason. Madison, Wis. at night during a carnival company showing mayor Curtis ordered police to shoot any student resisting arrest for assaulting officers. President Van Hise urged officers to show no discrimination and vowed to expel or suspend students convicted. convocation condemned rowdy conduct.

Southampton Sept 30 Joseph McCaddon proprietor of the McCaddon circus who collapsed in France was arrested as he boarded the steamer St Louis bound for New York. A warrant charging fraudulent bankruptcy was issued by French authorities. On board lay the coffin of his wife en route to London for burial.
Washington reports the Department of Commerce and Lauber dismissed James Anderson, an immigration service inspector in Buffalo, New York, for aiding smuggling of Chinese from Canada. Two Buffalo inspectors were dismissed two weeks earlier for the same offense.
Tokio reports that Japan settled peace at Portsmouth fearing a financial collapse as war costs rose and crops failed. Extended rain and cool weather in August threaten rice yields 1 to 20 percent below last year, risking hardship for the masses who rely on rice as bread and meat.
In Wilmington Delaware Judge Gray dismissed J Edward Addicks petition for a stay of proceedings in the $45,000 judgment against him by Charles Hinchman of Camden New Jersey. Cheyenne Wyoming September 29 Superintendent W A Whitney of the Wyoming division of the Union Pacific will shortly leave for the Hawaiian Islands on an extended leave of absence. Conductor Fred Letts of North Platte is made temporary trainmaster on the eastern end of the division with headquarters here to assist Superintendent Anderson during Whitney's absence.
Word from Lisbon Ohio reports John Andrews known as Jim the Penman has been captured there. Texas officers started with him for Texas where he is wanted for passing a 500 forged draft. Andrews was released from the penitentiary on August 21 and had been sought for days.

Indianapolis reports Wickard Wes, son-in-law of Joe Mur ray of Murrey Lumber, arrested on an indictment charging conspiracy to commit a felony. The case involves papers linked to David B. Sherrick and a $48 000 state audit debt. Wickard faces embezzlement and grand larceny counts and was released on a $15 000 bond.
Salt Lake City reports the federal building has passed into Postmaster Arthur L. Thomas’s hands but the post office likely will not move for six weeks or more. Furniture orders are delayed and not all is owned by the post office, with furnishing arriving around November. Some U S offices may move sooner, including the immigration inspector and clerk of court.
A fast electric street car plowed into the Butchers and Grocers parade at Second South and Main in Salt Lake City injuring John Lees a noted butcher and grocer. Lees suffered bruises and lacerations and was taken to his home by Patrolman Smoot after being dragged through the marching line.

The battleship Mississippi launched at Cramp's yards carries the smallest displacement among U S battleships except for its sister ship Idaho. Both ships measure about thirteen thousand tons, while other U S battleships stand at sixteen thousand tons with heavy armament. No rival navy matches their battery strength for ships of that size.
