A bomb at Haifa district police HQ killed ten and wounded about 77 as Jewish underground groups claimed responsibility. The blast hit police, guards, and civilians including British constables, Arab policemen, a 16 year old Arab girl, and a coffee vendor, with many injuries among passengers on a Jerusalem intercity bus.
A trio of boaters is missing after a boat overturned on Lake Lowell near Caldwell. One survivor, Mrs. John Ulrich of Nampa, was found wandering near a shack on a game refuge and flown to the hospital. Searchers hope to locate Mr. and Mrs. Rogers and others reported in distress.
Washington officials discussed a new policy to curtail foreign reporters admitted to cover United Nations sessions for Communist publications. The plan would apply to all foreign correspondents, matching the pledges required of Pierre Courtade of L Humanite, restricting travel, location, and activities during U N sessions.
Three persons were killed in Utah traffic accidents Saturday. Pete Ewell, 21, of Salt Lake City, died in a collision on South State Street. Rodney Buck, seven, son of Mr and Mrs William Buck of Layton, was fatally injured when struck on U S Highway 1 in the Layton area. A third victim, Simhoff, was instantly killed when a car overturned near Layton.
The state accuses Louise Overall and George Gollum of murdering wealthy parents for greed and lust. Deputy AG Dietz says they lied repeatedly to conceal the crime, citing a dynamite purchase and dynamite placed in their car during the Newport Beach yacht deaths case.
The Public Works Administration reports Utah up 56 percent in six months of 1947, while Idaho shows little change from 1946. Six-month expenditures: Utah 4,275,000 dollars. Idaho 3,818,000 dollars. Idaho highways lead at 2,665,000 dollars with non residential buildings at 523,000 and sewer and water work at 37,000.
Two men died and 15 bus passengers were injured when a Greyhound bus and an automobile collided on U S route 40 near Effingham. The deceased were Rolla F. Clark, 45, and Clarence Rickleman, about 50, both of Effingham, who rode in the car. The bus went into a ditch but did not overturn.
The United States demanded Russia disavow a Soviet writer's article likening President Truman to Hitler. Russia led by Foreign Minister Molotov rejected the protest, calling it insulting while defending its press as fair and accusing the U.S. press of lies and slander. Ambassador Smith delivered the protest in Moscow.
State law enforcement commissioner R. C. Lewis announced the Portneuf checking station six miles south of Pocatello would close on November 1 due to deteriorating facilities. He proposed a new combined building housing police checking and weighing offices, an information bureau for tourists, and rest rooms.
The Pocatello independent school district will supply 225 junior and 225 senior high pupils for two weeks of potato harvest to begin Oct. 6. Pupils will miss one school week each for juniors and seniors, with buses provided to gather and return them, and they will be paid on the regular salary schedule.

Union Pacific officials and Bannock county commissioners agreed on a new Cedar street crossing location by moving Montana line west. The 1000 foot west shift enables direct access to the Pacific Fruit Express ice plant for northbound produce trains, with 3200 feet of new grade under construction in Copperville near U S 30 N underpass.
The Gold Coast train linking San Francisco, Chicago and points east will be inaugurated October 1. Westbound departures from Chicago at 8 30 p m reach San Francisco at 8 50 a m on the third morning. Eastbound departures from San Francisco at 7 p m reach Chicago at 7 30 on the third morning. Standard sleepers include through cars Oakland to Washington and Oakland to St Louis via Wabash route.
District Judge D H Sutphen of Gooding ruled Idaho's slot machine law unconstitutional under anti lottery provisions. The suit by Delbert Barton challenged Weiser licensing, claiming license fees bore no relation to police costs. The memorandum noted slot machines are pure gambling devices and voids the ordinance and statute authorizing them.
In Marion Ohio Sheriff LeRoy Retterer said the body of 16 year old Roxie Ann Green was found near Norton and that Ray Sheppard 32 signed a statement admitting he killed her He allegedly struck her over the head with a hammer after picking her up as she walked home after a football game Sheppard denied improper advances to the girl.
Twelve armed bandits with machine guns hit the Mounds club near Painesville early today taking cash jewelry and furs valued at about 200000. Deputies said the gang rushed the guard outside and then lined employees and patrons against walls before forcing the manager to open the gambling bank and fleeing in three stolen cars.
An 8 millimeter movie camera and a Montague fly rod valued at 400 dollars were stolen Saturday night from the parked automobile of Dale Smith of Idaho Falls. The loss occurred while the car was at the Prontier club in the 100 block of Main.
A massive blaze on Hudson river pier 56 between 15th and 16th streets collapsed sections of the 1,000 foot structure. Forty fireboats and shore equipment fought the flames causing more than $5 million in damage and injuring 70 firefighters, none in critical condition. The fire triggered 35 signals across eight alarms, one of the department history’s largest.
Washington reports a budget swing to a $14,042,407.85 surplus in the current fiscal year as tax payments from corporations and individuals offset a deficit of more than $1.5 billion earlier this month. Officials cite progress toward Truman’s forecast of a year end surplus and note Britain’s use of loan funds affects the pace of deficit reduction.

The U.S. destroyer Douglas H. Fox struck a mine 18 miles off Trieste while moving toward the free territory. Three sailors died, four more were critically injured, and eight required hospital care. The Owen took Fox casualties aboard. the Fox had about 200 men aboard.
An eastbound Spokane Portland and Seattle passenger train hit a rock slide after a cloudburst east of WISHRAM Washington. Engineer Oscar Lyle of Vancouver died in the cab. Fireman Kenneth Stolte of Portland burned. Conductor P W Lee suffered minor injuries. Express clerk George Schoonover of Portland hospitalized. Three others treated for injuries. Eight coaches and sleepers remained upright.
Ricks college expects two English war brides to join its veteran student group this fall. Mrs. Jay L. Nichols and Mrs. Don Bishop, once neighbors in Wigan England, now live at College Heights. Nichols attends with her husband to pursue citizenship study while Bishop plans winter enrollment. The couples met when stationed with the U S army air force at an air depot near Wigan.
Detective Guy Nelson said Jack D. Nelson, 23, was arrested in Pocatello on a Panhandle Texas warrant alleging sale of mortgaged farm machinery. Sheriff Clarence C. Williams requested the arrest. Nelson refused extradition, and Pocatello police expect an extradition order to Gov. C A Robins of Idaho.
