Kirke L. Simpson reports that Russians have rapidly reformed a defense east of Kiev and halted German advances toward Kharkov. Despite heavy losses, Moscow reinforced defenses and moved reserves east of the Dnieper, delaying Nazi plans and suggesting a grueling stalemate potential for the winter.
Police Captain Fred Williams filed a murder charge against Charles N Ney 55 also known as James C Hayden after Ney identified a naked woman stuffed in a trunk with a rope around her throat as his wife. The body was found when Ney asked the apartment owner to aid with the trunk and the coroner estimated death last Thursday from a skull fracture.
Robert Berry and Frank West were sentenced by Justice Mendenhall at Lago to ten days in jail and to pay court costs for disturbing the peace in Grace. They were returned to Pocatello by Deputies Bert Empey and Harold Ferguson. Sheriff Deve McNichols announced Saturday night he had taken into custody Jack D. Spangie, wanted at Fairfield on a theft of tools charge.
Jerome authorities hold Blanche Kingcade about 28 after a shooting at the Kingcade home. Lloyd Kingcade is in Wendell hospital with a head wound from a .22 rifle bullet. Nick Rossi, 45, partner at the ranch, is being questioned as details remain conflicting. No charges yet filed.
Thirteen Libby Maine crewmen rescued as search continues for missing after the American freighter sank in a Caribbean hurricane near San Juan. Seven of 32 aboard are dead, including Capt H Bierd and Chief Mate Harry Christiansen.
Police report a collision at 1 45 p m Saturday at the Garfield Sublette intersection between a sedan driven by George Cox of 1414 North Garfield and a coupe driven by Tillie Johnson of 1111 East Center. Damages include bumper grill and fender on the Cox car and fender and hub cap on the Johnson coupe.
W. L. Robbins manager of the state employment bureau reports farm workers are badly needed in Idaho Falls Shelley Blackfoot Burley and Twin Falls for potato picking and beet field work. Potato pickers are paid seven cents a sack.
Lora Stratford daughter of Mr and Mrs Rae Stratford left Saturday for Logan where she is a senior at Utah State college majoring in home economics and journalism.
Boston College and Lafayette, last year’s unbeaten eastern clubs, were stunned in season openers. Tulane toppled BC 21-7 in New Orleans while Virginia blanked Lafayette 25-0. Minnesota beat Washington 14-6, Stanford edged Oregon 19-15, USC beat Oregon State 13-7, Cal routed St Mary’s 31-0, Idaho lost to Utah 26-7, and South Carolina upset North Carolina 13-7. Pittsburgh fell to Vinilt 3-0, Indiana defeated by Detroit 14-7.
Anne Keefe announces Bannock county tax levies for 1941 covering municipalities school districts and cemetery districts. The total Bannock county levy is 1.68 with state and various local funds including current expense fund road bridge airport and S.M. Memorial building. Pocatello Independent School District No 1 levies 2.25 matching 1940. Cemetery maintenance districts list assorted per area levies.
Soldier Rulon L. Johnson from Salt Lake City enlisted at Gowan Field to save 21 mining claims near Clifton Arizona. He joined four Stevens brothers to avoid $2,100 annual assessment work under Arizona law. The men hoped Johnson's army enlistment would suspend required work while they operated locally.
The body of John L. Driscoll Jr., 25, of Boise, Idaho, was found in a wrecked army trainer plane in the north central California foothills after a wing collapsed during a formation flight from Mather Field. Second Lt. J. H. Carter, 25, of Anderson, S C., parachuted to safety.

Washington August 27 Committee Chairman Clark of Idaho said a senate panel will weigh possible war propaganda in films by watching about six pictures during the week of Oct 6 He noted the films may speak louder than witnesses and said a list of titles to be viewed was not yet final The hearings resume Oct 6 and Clark remains undecided on prosecuting a coordinated effort by producers to influence public support for entry into the war

Three persons were killed instantly when their car collided with an eastbound Union Pacific streamliner near the Crook railroad station. Victims were Mrs. Marie Walz of Crook about 50, her son-in-law Henry Wagner 30 from Bayard Nebraska, and Wagner's son Harry Lee Walz 7. Logan County Coroner A D Jackson said Wagner failed to see the oncoming train. J T Guyman of North Platte Nebraska was the train engineer.
