Governor C A Bottolfsen defended the 1939 legislative tax record before Idaho county officials. He explained the 69.3 cent per $100 levy consisted of bond interest and sinking fund 7.7 cents, schools 25.9, relief 6.3, with operation dropped, and argued shifts show relief and education costs absorbed by state sums.

Mrs. Maron Jorgensen aged 82 died from a skull fracture after being struck by a truck at a Salt Lake City intersection last Friday. The death raises Utah’s traffic toll for the year to TT. Driver Robert G. Gray said the vehicle was moving at a moderate speed and he did not see the woman.
CHICAGO Sept 28 Mrs William H Corwith of Rockville Centre New York was elected president of the American Legion auxiliary today.
Cincinnati Reds defeat St Louis 5 to 3 to clinch the National League pennant for the first time in 20 years. Scoring details include Lanier Davis Bowman Padgett Owen Derringer Lombard for Cincinnati and Lanier for St Louis with parsings of the box lineups and game notes from the Associated Press report.
In New York on September 28 Grover Cleveland Bergdoll faces an added penalty for evading the World War draft. Two of his five children testified he lived secretly in Philadelphia during part of the 19 years he was a fugitive in Germany. If convicted he could receive five and a half more years in prison beyond his current five year sentence.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a neutrality bill to allow U S arms sales to belligerents. The vote was 16 to 7 with debate to begin Monday. The measure would end embargoes but require buyers to take title and ship goods in their own vessels.

The 3378 ton Swedish freighter Nyland reported it was halted by a submarine and torpedoed seven hours later. All 29 crew were saved by Norwegian torpedo boats after lying in lifeboats off the Norwegian coast. The ship carried iron ore for Antwerp and had been at Stavanger.
Ogden and Pocatello will gain Marine Corps recruiting substations in the near future, according to Salt Lake City enlistment officer Sgt. John W. Townsend. In the meantime, recruits may apply by mail to the Salt Lake City office.
