Senator O Mahoney said the Soviet Union lacks the industrial know how and facilities to stockpile atomic bombs. He disputed Hickenlooper Brown on leaks aiding Russia and defended AEC security, noting Russia’s difficulty matching U S industrial capability.
In a swift senate-house committee accord a $1.314 billion overseas arms program was approved, strengthening allied nations against communism amid Russia’s atomic test claims. The conference backed the higher senate figure, vs the House’s $869 million, and aimed to finalize action soon. Connally said Russian reports gave the program new strength.

Missing 16 year old Wilma C Smith disappeared from Las Vegas on Aug 3 1949. Police describe her as 5 ft 7 in 155 lbs blue eyes dark blonde hair and fair complexion. They say she may have been lured by Ernest Carl Dandridge a 26 year old navy veteran 5 ft 7 in 140 lbs brown hair and eyes. Notify Pocatello police with any information.
The Tokyo Rose treason trial jury of twelve resumed deliberations in federal court. Iva Toguri d Aquino, 33, born in Los Angeles, faced charges for wartime broadcasts from Radio Tokyo as Orphan Ann aimed at lowering U S troop morale. The panel spent the night locked up without overnight gear.
Francis M. LeMay reports Congress assigns a general revision of federal tax laws as a 1950 priority. The plan may introduce new taxes to balance the budget, though some excise levies may be reduced. Speaker Rayburn pushes action on Social Security expansion to clear the way for tax revisions, with experts warning deficit financing could end.
Four crashes on Monday left fourteen dead and potentially thirty nine missing in Mexico the United States and England. A Mexican Airlines plane with 24 aboard reportedly vanished on Popocatepetl with rescue efforts under way. In central England two RAF bombers collided during exercises killing twelve fliers with two missing. In Power county Idaho judge Arthur West fined James C. Stromme a 200 dollar penalty and suspended six months in jail on two battery charges. Stromme pleaded to amended counts from assault with a deadly weapon to simple battery after two complaints by R. E. Marshall and Jane Bradley of Pocatello. He allegedly accosted the couple near Schiller in Power county, leading to a hospital visit for both parties. Stromme, once a close friend of Jane Bradley, planned to frighten the pair. Attorney O R Baum represented Stromme. William Loofbourrow led the plaintiffs' case.
CROFINO Idaho Five persons arrested for cattle theft in four months. William Ladd of Orofino sentenced to 14 years. Charles Raymond Buchert of Lewiston to be returned from Vancouver Washington to face cattle stealing charges.
State police moved to curb violence as 17 pickets were arrested around the Wingert mine near Sligo Clarion county amid a mass return to work by about 250 non union diggers. About 35 mines in Clearfield area resumed after a week of idleness, with over 50 troopers patrolling highways to prevent clashes.
