Berlin report states Germany Italy and Japan formed a 10 year military and economic pact pledging mutual aid against any new foe in Europe or Asia. Hitler watched as Rome Berlin and Tokyo sealed the agreement joining 250 million people in a unified bloc.
Election of officers for Idaho Educational Association districts fifth and sixth was held at the high school. Bond and Gray, both from Pocatello, elected officers with a joint convention vote next year. The convention praised Pocatello and local schools. The world front pact by Tokyo Berlin Rome pledged mutual aid, hinting at a united front against US interference.
The fifth and sixth district Idaho Educational Association two day gathering in Pocatello opened with a joint business session led by Edwin Hirshi and E. H. Barrus. C. E. Roberts Elmer E. Wilson and Mrs. Charles Roe spoke stressing convention value to teaching methods endowment fund investment in public schools.
Idaho Falls superintendent W W Christensen opened a panel at the I E S joint convention arguing Germany’s rise as a threat and urging schools to align with national defense goals. The forum followed a banquet for 350 of 1,500 teachers and featured talks on education and public health concepts.
A car driven by Ben Scott of Idaho Falls ran off the highway five and a half miles north of Poca, sheared a power pole, and ended in a deep ditch. Scott had a facial cut and was to visit a hospital for x rays, but did not return. Two companions were traveling with him. the crash was blamed on the driver attempting to light a cigarette.
Detroit leads Cleveland 2 0 after Rudy York hit a towering home run with Charley Gehringer aboard in the fourth inning. Floyd Giebell, the Detroit rookie, held the Indians to one hit through three frames in a crucial early game at Municipal Stadium.
Johnny Babich limited the Yankees to five hits as Philadelphia defeated New York 6 to 2 in a weathered, late season doubleheader. The loss ends New Yorks bid for the AL title, ending an eight game winning streak. Other scores from the day include Detroit at Cleveland and St Louis at Chicago with varied outcomes.
The state fish and game department extended the elk hunting area to Chamberlain basin in Idaho County east of the South Fork of the Salmon River and south of the main Salmon. The season runs from October 5 to November 5, five days shorter than the northern Salmon area.
German warplanes launched a massive aerial assault on England with hundreds of raiders. By late afternoon at least 98 were reported shot down. A great air battle unfolded over southwest London as British and German forces clashed, while long-range artillery duels raged over the Strait.

San Mateo county grand jury indicted Wilhelm Muhlenbroich for the abortive kidnapping of Marc de Tristan Jr. Captors Cecil Wetzel and Ellis Wood were rewarded by the child's parents, Count and Countess de Tristan, with a sum between 25 000 and 30 000 to be split. Witnesses Mary Foley and Harvey Wester testified. Muhlenbroich faces life imprisonment if convicted. The $100 000 ransom was not paid.
O Youngstrom extension economist visits Pocatello to assist Downey Live Stock Marketing members in forming a corporate structure for the hog growers group. The aim is to organize the Downey pact into a formal marketing association.
Idaho Southern University opens fall registration as freshmen attend a mixer in the new Student Union ballroom at 9 a.m. The registrar’s office offers hours 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Freshmen must complete physical examinations today. The football season begins Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Halliwell Park against Western State.
Glen Taylor of Pocatello, Democratic candidate for United States senator, says Republican State Chairman Thomas Heath erred in claiming President Roosevelt favored Argentine beef over domestic. Taylor notes Roosevelt did not say Argentine beef was superior and cites Argentine corned beef tests. He supports cooperative packing plants and urges stockmen to act in their best interests.
Idaho Falls reports federal officials are sold on the South Fork reservoir project as an $18 million plan. Reclamation Commissioner John Page and attorney B E Stoutmeyer indicated possible action depends on national defense power decisions. If water power is approved the project may advance. leases for American Falls water were shortened to one year.
The Tribune regrets an engagement announcement for Barbara Fillmore and Robert Brockway that appeared Wednesday. The item, sent to the editorial office, bore authenticity marks but was not authorized by the couple or Miss Fillmore’s parents and is described as an irresponsible joke causing embarrassment.
Mrs. Caroline Richards Bell aged 73 died at her Salt Lake City home. Survivors include her husband and 10 siblings such as Willard Richards of Pocatello Idaho Mrs. Martha Groo and Mrs. Maud Tooner of Montpelier Idaho and Miss Ianthus Richards of Ogden Utah.
In England 46 survivors return including six shivering schoolboys from the City of Benares disaster. One woman escort Mary Cornish recalls the peril eight days at sea as 77 evacuee children are still missing and presumed dead. The lifeboat rescue followed torpedoing claims. a Sunderland aircraft and Bohdan Nagorski aided in retrieval.
Tokyo and Washington both signal restraint after Japan forges alliance with Germany and Italy. Yaichiro Suma denies entering Europe war while UK and US policy remains fixed in the Pacific. Asahi argues ensuing clash with the United States is now likely as scrap metal embargo and China loan influence East Asia.
Ted Trueblood reports that antelope hunters in five eastern Idaho counties largely completed their hunts quickly. All permittees reportedly bagged game with no reports of unsuccessful hunts. The heaviest dressed animal weighed 96 pounds, and sixty nine were checked on Thursday.
