War Department Places $1.0 Billion in Defense Orders

President Roosevelt announced that within eight days the war department placed $1,000,810,889 in orders for vital defense equipment under a $5 billion defense appropriation act. Navy contracts dominated, with about 200 warships. Army major items included ammunition and ordnance facilities, plus aircraft, engines, radial engines, small arms, tanks, and clothing.

Boatmen Recover Last Body From American Falls Lake

James Toomey 24 of 450 South Tenth was found drifting three miles from Rainbow beach and Harry Eller 25 of Coulee City Wash was found drifting about eight miles into the lake. Police say both sank near the overturned boat after removing shoes. Officers note Eller swam beyond land but waves pushed him toward Rainbow beach.
