Atlanta reports a black exodus as ten negro corpses are prepared for burial and militia remain on duty. Zeb Long was found hanged eight miles south of the city after a jail break, while outside militia mostly dismissed except the Fifth Regiment. Negroes are scarce and white labor is sought as telegraph and mail routes face disruption.
Washington reports a livelier Cuban mood with officials leaning away from intervention though force landings remain possible. Mediation talks were postponed due to Pelayo Garcia illness while an armistice was signed. Insurgents seek relief from rains amid discipline concerns and rumors of tacit government concession to rebels and liberals.
The Pring Adel bert with Paul Stensland aboard was sighted and will reach Hoboken by four. A tug with Theodore Stensland and officers went out to meet the steamer. Stensland warned that if his father was illegally arrested he would seek extradition and ask Assistant States Attorney Olsen for permission to talk with him as both son and lawyer. If arrest was legal, no habeas corpus actions would be taken.
Thirty eight men linked to a revolutionary military league are detained in Vilna. Letters describing league activities at other garrisons are seized as part of the crackdown.
Minneapolis dispatch reports six dead in a rear end crash on the Minneapolis and St. Louis line at New Prague Minnesota. A south bound passenger train struck a freight causing derailment of the entire train. Both engine crews were killed.
Senator W B Heyburn of Idaho explains he drafted and pushed the Pure Food bill, crediting President Roosevelt for backing it. He says the law, to take effect January 1, prohibits adulteration and fraudulent labeling, unifying state and federal efforts, and already caused large adulterated food factories to cease operation. He notes the long struggle in the Senate committee on manufactures and his need to enlist others to advance further measures.
New York police continued the probe into a dismembered torso found at Eleventh Avenue and Thirty-sixth Street. The missing thigh was recovered, the head remains sought for identification, and five men seen beating a victim near the scene are being traced. A butcher knife was recovered under a plank, and an Italian purchaser linked to a table covering similar to that used for wrapping the torso is being investigated. Manuel Lopes Havana Cigars advertised nearby.
A sensational report claims a Japanese railroad crew on the Short Line pilfered soap from a wrecked freight train at Highbridge. Deputy sheriffs and a Short Line agent recovered soap stashed in cars and bins as investigators press for arrests, with Harry Kinport credited for the discovery.
The body of P J Clomas was buried in Pocatello after he was shot at Shoshone Friday morning by Fred Regan. Eagles and Locomotive Brotherhoods attended the funeral. Local lodges plan to prosecute Regan with Attorney Frank Holzheimer. Regan, a Shoshone carpenter, has relatives in Hailey. Patrolman Pat Morton, tied to the gun, was released from arrest for complicity. Eagles view the killing as cold blooded with robbery as motive.

Three men Edward Howard Albert Roach and Thomas Cole were arrested Saturday night by Constable A M Brown in Savannah Ga for passing small denomination counterfeit notes of the Merchants Planters bank They deny the charges but evidence is strong and they await county attorney examination A fourth man fled The suspects may face charges of obtaining money under false pretenses pending identification by Marcus Baum and two local merchants previously passed bogus bills
Pundit Dr. N. Krishna of Bombay India visits Pocatello as part of a America tour studying law and customs. He condemns British rule in India, plans to lecture on democracy and social reform, and cites affiliations with the Indian National Congress and other groups. He arrived from Logan and will stay several days.
At 2 o clock this afternoon Joe Cohen took possession of the 8 F Baum liquor store on North Cleveland avenue after purchasing the entire business He has been a traveling representative for the Franklin Hayes Brewing company for two years and plans a fresh stock aimed at the Intermountain region Baum and family will move to New York with many friends expressing regret.
Judge Alfred Budge completed one of the county’s most successful district court terms. Eight criminals were sentenced. Dover and Robinson got five years each. Martin and McClelland received 10 and 15 months for burglary. Morris got one year for forgery. Downs sent to reform school for rape. Stoner and Manistee got short jail terms for assault. remaining cases resolved or continued with judgments and stays as proceedings wrap up before October 15.
Commissioner Prouty of the Interstate Commerce Commission heard evidence today in Salt Lake for Union Pacific coal land hearings. Vice-President and General Manager Bancroft of the Oregon Short Line testified as part of the continuing case previously heard in Omaha.
