Road Crash Kills Eleven Youths Near La Porte
Eleven people died and six were injured in a head on collision between a small onion farm truck and a large semi trailer on a straight stretch of Highway five miles south of La Porte Indiana. Witnesses said the crash looked like a bomb hit the vehicles. All the injured were in critical or serious condition. The semi was driven by Robert Tweedie, 35, Logansport, and he was in critical condition.

Under a military truce CIO Longshoremen pickets withdrew from West Coast docks and the army resumed loading cargo for Pacific outposts. About 30 percent of West Coast shipping was idle as strikes by the Maritime and Longshore unions paused only the highest priority military loads. At Oak Street and Po Avenue a green light left Peter Ospital of Urb an farmer 59 injured and charged with reckless driving after a left turn triggered a three vehicle crash. Mrs Mary Lombardi 28 suffered a broken arm while her son Frederick 4 was treated for shock. Lombardi Sr drove the southbound Ford and the Lombardi vehicle struck Ospital’s ten and a half truck which overturned onto Loraine Reese’s car. The truck sustained the most damage as officers George Lonchar and James Akers investigated the scene and cited the left turn as a driver’s own risk with oncoming traffic having right of way.
