Zion's Herald reports Senator William E. Borah of Idaho views no practical difference between Republican and Democratic platforms on the 18th amendment. He says both parties would repeal the amendment in effect, leaving voters disfranchised in the presidential election.
Rep Addison T Smith complains that the treasury secretary and postmaster general should have consulted Idaho senators and representatives before dropping a $120,000 federal building project in Blackfoot from the emergency relief program. The lease on federal buildings ends July 1, 1937, and the plan is abandoned without justification.
The Labor Department reports August building costs rose 4.5 percent from July based on 352 cities with populations over 25 000. Employment gains in July were sustained in August with continued higher activity in parts of the country. Aggregate building cost reached 37 137 073 dollars as operations increased 18.7 percent.
In Wisconsin the La Follette Progressive group was swept from power as Gov Philip F. La Follette lost reelection to Walter J. Kohler by about 76,000 votes with many precincts yet to report. Senator Robert M. La Follette Jr. also fell behind John B. Chapple as John J. Blaine trailed Chapple in incomplete tallies. The contest produced Wisconsin’s largest primary turnout to date with roughly 800,000 to 900,000 votes cast.
Mrs. William E. Borah, wife of Senator Borah, diagnosed with psittacosis and hospitalized for a week with a high fever. Condition reported serious daily.
President Hoover will outline the agricultural situation in his October 4 Des Moines address while covering other topics. Secretary Mills noted the political situation and Wisconsin results, with Hoover sticking to a three-speech plan, two in the West.
Dean John R. Dyer reports more students at the Southern Branch during initial registration. Mayor Joseph V. McKee secured a court ruling preventing a November mayoral election. Following his interim ascent after James J. Walker's resignation, the decision keeps McKee in office until the next regular election a year away, despite Tammany Hall opposition.
The Baptist Ministers' conference and Women's Missionary society of Idaho passed resolutions urging continued support for the eighteenth amendment and prohibition enforcement. They urged backing candidates against changing liquor laws. A. B. Hubbard of Filer was elected ministers' conference president. Glen Garner of Hailey vice president. J. J. Prey of Roberts secretary-treasurer. Mrs. W. J. Agee Boise president and secretary director. Portfolios also assigned to several Boise and Buhl members.
In Ogden on September 21 an inquest heard Sheriff Amasa Hammon testify that Carl Shipley confessed he killed Eunice Telford Stokes, 21, and that Shipley also died by his own hand after blaming the woman for his ill health.
Marjorie June Boan six year old daughter of Henry W Boan of Grays Lake died at home after being accidentally shot by a boy firing a 22 caliber rifle. The bullet hit her right hip causing internal hemorrhage. Coroner B J Allen said no inquest will be held. The accident occurred while children played in the house. She is survived by her parents Lily M Boat and Henry W Boan and three siblings.
Increased orders at the Short Line bring more work for trains station and yard crews. Seasonal yet hopeful activity returns to railroad circles with growing shipments nearing levels seen in better years.
At the regular meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union held Tuesday at the Y W C A parlors plans were made for a district meeting in Pocatello next Friday at 1 pm. The Idaho Falls Blackfoot American Falls and Pocatello organizations will gather with Mrs Martha Field of American Falls presiding. Officers were elected for another term: Dr Minnie Howard president, Mrs Paul E Rider corresponding secretary, Mrs W E Brani vice president, Mrs Glen Mullihan recording secretary, and Mrs Belle Woodmansee treasurer.
London reports the death of John Ellis, famed public hangman who, over 22 years, executed more than 200 criminals. His career ended with nerves failing in 1924, resignation, and his subsequent suicide. Notably he presided over the 1923 Edith Thomson case and Bywaters murder trial.
Byron Defenbach Republican candidate for governor denounces Governor Ross request to cut the state tax levy as a bluff and childish. He says the administration has a large spending list and will require taxes from all people, with arrears in county payments totaling 500000. He criticizes timing and pledges relief by Republicans next year.
Senator Reed Smoot credited President Hoover with saving the nation from panic and disintegration at a Republican meeting in Salt Lake City. He accused Democrats of lacking a constructive program and launching a campaign of nullification while praising administration measures like the credit acts, tariff, tax program, and cuts in government spending.
Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt arrived in Portland at 9 45 a m for a west coast campaign parade. He planned to visit Gresham Multnomah County Pomona Grange and then move south through Salem and Eugene toward California with Sacramento arrival planned at 3 10 p m Thursday. Walter B Gleason greeted Roosevelt at the station and Roosevelt’s train crossed from Vancouver after leaving Seattle last midnight.
In Chicago on September 21 a 16 year old boy and a 16 year old girl were hospitalized after a bomb tossed from a moving car exploded near Superior Court Judge John P. McGoorty’s residence. Police hunt James Fur Sammons, ex convict and alleged Capone syndicate gunman, as details emerge of the attack.

Two men bound University of Idaho Southern Branch watchman G. L. Gregerson and blew the safe in the general offices early this morning escaping with about 300 dollars in cash and checks and opening day receipts totaling thousands later taken to the bank.
