Council laid over telephone franchises for two weeks and reread the McCammon Investment electric light ordinance. It also re referred the extended cement sidewalk ordinance, ordered cement sidewalks at corners, moved city scales to a new street location, censured the street overseer, and adjourned to Thursday October 3.
Last night the council discussed Arthur D. Coons independent telephone franchise for 50 years. Alderman Terrell pressed for quick action while opponents urged delay and bonds. City Attorney Witty warned against forced entry into city limits, with debate over a dual system and potential benefits to the public.
James Ingersoll of Pocatello Idaho testified in Kansas City that he knew nothing of the Uncle Sam Oil company operations or finances and did not even know he was its president until summoned as a witness. The company recently went bankrupt after a government fraud order, with creditors seeking clarity from the board of directors.
Chicago reports five members of the Parhamites sect were arrested in Zion City for torturing 64 year old Mrs Letitia Greenhaulgh to death. The accused include her son Walter Greenhaugh and daughter Jennie Greenhaugh and Harold Mitchell and his wife and Mrs Smith. They believed she was possessed and twisted her neck and savaged her arms in a brutal alleged exorcism. Authorities were notified after attempts to revive her failed.
Mrs R W Holmes wife of the candy man is confined at their apartments in the Mountain View with a severe attack of tonsillitis.
Fred Brown and his wife returned yesterday after a two week visit in Balt Lake and surrounding area.
Senator Borah says he will not consent to participate in Hawley Pettibone proceedings and offers to relieve in his own trial whenever his services are needed.
Boise Sept 20 Judge Whitman addresses the special grand jury on the land fraud indictments against United States District Attorney Ruick. He notes the jury can return a true bill only if proven corrupt motives. The judge warned that if charges by former grand jurors aren t sustained indictments may be issued against those jurors.
In Boise district court Senator Borah announced his case should not affect Pettibone. Judge Wood set October 14 as the Pettibone trial start, with two weeks possible postponement. Defense and prosecution debated bail and timing as Hawley’s federal duties influenced schedule.
William Jennings Bryan will address the people of Pocatello tonight at McNichols and Wright around 10 o clock. He arrives from Blue Lakes and Twin Falls as guest of Bert Perrine and will be introduced by W. H. Lockhart with Fred T. Du Bois present. The hall is expected to be crowded as curiosity brings attendees from all parties.
Miss Fraser head of the Hennessey cloak and suit department in Butte visited Pocatello on return from New York a telegram ordered cancellation of all possible orders due to the lockout at Butte and Anaconda displacing 8000 workers. Fraser bought about 30000 dollars worth of goods with total canceled orders likely 225000 dollars. Miners pass through daily. southbound train crowded. Trade stagnates and experts doubt a quick settlement.
A Juneau report says Jack Simpkins, wanted by Idaho as a witness in the Haywood trial, was seen on the streets after being recognized. He had links to Harry Orchard and was linked to Caldwell near the Steunenberg explosion. A large reward and attorney A A Crane’s expected arrival are noted.
The Pocatello Stake of the L D S church holds its quarterly conference in McCammon this weekend with a coach attached to a freight train for attendees from Pocatello. Apostle David McKay will attend.
