Divers probed the sunken SS Noronie as the death toll rose to 121 with 84 still missing after the blaze. Red Cross officials estimated up to 205 total dead, while survivors and relatives gathered in Toronto as authorities searched cabins and prepared morgues for the victims.
A Southern Railway passenger train derailed at a yard in Yewton North Carolina spilling six cars down an embankment. About fifty people were injured with two cooks reported trapped in the diner and possibly dead, prompting an emergency call for rescue equipment.
Jury picked in fifth district court to hear Floyd Brower versus Everett Alldredge before Judge Isaac McDougall. Brower seeks 106 dollars for truck repairs while Alldredge counters with a 520 dollar cross claim for unfinished work.

Bannock county commissioners set October 18 as the date for a special hospital bond election announced by chairman W. H. Jensen and Commissioner Jack Aljers. The $500,000 issue funds construction and equipment for a hospital at Pocatello and a receiving hospital at Downey. An earlier $1,000,000 bond from 1846 proved insufficient due to delays and rising costs.
Senator Glen H. Taylor reports a telegram from John R. Steelman noting the DoD and GSA will explore using the Poca navy ordnance plant for a government function. If no public use is found, sale and possible private operation are considered.

Prime Minister Joseph Chifley and Herbert Coombes guarded plans by avoiding leaks, and Sir Stafford Cripps signed his copy en route to a broadcast. The move aimed to inform U.S., Canadian, and Commonwealth officials prior to public announcement.
London reports show the new dollar values for devalued currencies. Britain and Ireland adjust to about four dollars per Pound, while South Africa Australia Egypt Burma Israel India Denmark Norway discuss shifts. Effective rate cited at $4.03 official.

Chicago printers end a 22 month strike against five major dailies after union acceptance of a $10 weekly wage boost. About 1,500 workers participated in the stoppage.
Airman Bernt Balchen completed a non stop 3700 mile flight from Anchorage Alaska to Oslo Norway in 22.5 hours aboard a U S Air Force transport plane Brig Gen Frank A Armstrong commander of the Air Force in Alaska joined Balchen on the mission Weather forced a change from a North Pole route so the team flew via North Greenland Balchen Armstrong and three officers shared piloting duties on the record run.
Pittsburgh reports a nationwide halt in coal mining as United Mine Workers strike over welfare funds and pensions spreads to 20 states. About 480,000 workers idle as West Virginia soft coal and Pennsylvania mines suspend activity, with deep operator-worker split and no-work orders continuing.

CIO President Philip Murray urged settlement of the pensions dispute at government conciliation talks with Cyrus Ching and 70 steel-industry reps. The presidential fact finding board proposed a pension and social insurance package costing up to 10 cents per hour, with no fourth wage rise. Benjamin F. Fairless of U S Steel signaled willingness to contribute up to four cents for social insurance, but opposed full pension funding.
