Maj. Rich ard L. Johnson, air force war ace, set a 671 mph world speed mark over a three kilometer course at Muroc base California. The record, 670.98 mph, surpassed the previous 650.796 mph by Marine Lt. Col Marion E. Carl on Aug. 25, 1947, using an unarmed F-86 in speed runs. The Equity Oil Co. Ashley Valley No. 1 near Vernal produced oil in commercial quantities for the first time. Initial flow at 1:43 p.m. MST came after opening a valve in the Weber sands at 4152 feet.
