President Roosevelt prepared for a cross country trip with major speeches likely along the way. He packed for days at Hyde Park before road travel as campaign gear signaled a vigorous pace and renewed attacks on the Supreme Court.
The six state Rocky Mountain region drew 11,400,000 visitors in the summer of 1937, with New Mexico leading at 3,272,000 visitors. Thompson notes figures reflect total trip costs and include some spending counted across states.
Mr and Mrs F A Zeigler with daughter Kathryn and son Fredrick of Elizabethtown PA returned to Pocatello last week after a ten day tour of Los Angeles and Pacific coast points They visited Mrs Zeigler s brother W S Meader at 355 North Seventh Street owner and former operator of the Meader Trout Farm near the airport They plan to leave for Pennsylvania in about two weeks.
This week the Idaho State Federation of Labor holds a three day gathering with a Monday 9 a m opening of the executive board to choose a new president and a new vice president. Delegates will hear from Mayor Robert M Terrell and other officials as the program proceeds with addresses by A R Nichols and federation officers.
Among 792 students registering Friday and Saturday at Idaho Southern university three coeds chose careers not tied to the kitchen. Fay Stacy of Twin Falls enrolled in chemical engineering, Helen Montgomery of Boise began civil engineering as a freshman, and Dorothy Hall of Pocatello joined the vocational printing program.
Michigan Senator Arthur Vandenberg rallied about 1,000 grassroots supporters in Bay City urging a coalition under GOP standards. He attacked President Roosevelt’s constitutional approach, defended a substitute amendment, and promised swift ratification if Congress acted within nine months.
Charles Jenkins a 26 year old from Smithfield Utah was struck by an Idaho Pacific freight train near the Montana Junction two miles north of Pocatello and left in critical condition at General Hospital. He suffered multiple injuries including leg amputations and a fractured hip and shoulder. Police and train crew aided him and an investigation was ordered by railroad officials. Ranger Jack Dunn of the rodeo heard the news but could not identify the man.
Leon Trotsky said his former secretary Erwin Wolff, 34, has been arrested in Spain by Russian secret police agents. Trotsky fears he will be taken to Russia to compel a confession implicating Trotsky in conspiracies against Stalin.
Low pressure near Pocatello drives an unusual September heat wave with temperatures reaching 90 Friday and 88 Saturday. H. H. Smith of the Weather Bureau notes the event is atypical for September, with slightly above normal humidity and light winds. Friday night dropped to 56 degrees and September totals show an excess of 107.
A cloudy period is expected Sunday and Monday with possible showers in the northwest portion Sunday night or Monday. Cooler air arrives in the northwest Monday.
Lewiston reports Representative R. G Bailey accuses in a press statement that a $25,000 legislative appropriation for a state highway bureau audit is being misused. He calls for a grand jury inquiry and notes the initial audit report omits the period and findings expected by the act.
Anxiety grows for the 20 crew aboard the British racing sloop Endeavor T missing after losing its tow in a 100 mile gale Monday night. A three day coast guard search over 200 miles east of Nantucket to Nova Scotia found no trace or signals from Endeavor. Hamburg captain Ludwig Schlimbach warned it could be seen again or never heard from. coast guard to finish coverage north of the west bound track by tomorrow.
Charles W. Kennedy aged 60 of Belfonte Del collapsed at the throttle as a 30 car Pennsylvan ia freight train approached Jersey Dry from Wilmington. Fireman C H Tomlinson of Wilmington Del seized the throttle and stopped the train at Rahway tower.
Latter day Saints in and around Salt Lake City will fast tomorrow and donate the money saved to fund a regional warehouse for bumper crops storage. About 125,000 people are expected to participate as the church reads security program addresses urging debt avoidance, self reliance, and storing food and fuel for a year ahead. The plan, led by Winston Smither and J Reuben Clark Jr, aims to lift Mormons off relief rolls through mutual aid and prudent preparation.
Three 16 year old Pocatel lo boys Jack Morris Douglas Sander and Lewis Wilson confessed to burglaries at Stratford Furniture Blair Fry Motor company Spa Lava Electric Service Bushh Motor Gem State Motor and more over two months. Two cars were stolen from Gem State and wrecked at the Spa Lava. radios and a public address system were recovered. Morris is described as the group leader and police expect further confessions.
Reports say Italian volunteers are being enrolled as Europe faces rising danger from the Spanish Civil War. An unidentified plane attacked the British destroyer Fearless off northern Spain but missed, with officials calling it likely mistaken identity. Great Britain and France urged Italy to join the nine power patrol. Rome refused, insisting on equal rights to patrol Mediterranean waters.
Sonny McCully waived preliminary hearing on assault with a deadly weapon and was bound over to Bannock County authorities under a 2.5 bond. The complaint by his father alleges abduction of Juanita McCully from her father’s home after an alleged fight on the sidewalk. A second charge, likely changed to robbery, involves forcing the wife into a car with a knife. she received knife wounds and was treated at the General hospital.
The transport Chaumon arrived off Woosuneg in the Yangtse estuary above Shanghai with 1,435 Marines, bringing the Shanghai war sector total to 2,700 as reinforcements. The sixth regiment United States Marines were sent from San Diego to bolster guards in the International settlement after five weeks of Sino-Japanese conflict in Shanghai.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs T McLaughlin at St Anthony hospital reported on Saturday. The baby’s birth at 337 West Bridger is noted in the local hospital bulletin.
Missoula Montana September 18 A Montana prison fugitive Ben Swartz was killed in a gunfight with officers near his hideout west of Missoula after officers used tear gas and rifle fire. Undersheriff R D MacLean and Deputy George Bukovatz rushed the shack and found Swartz dead with a rifle in his hands, days after his escape from Deer Lodge penitentiary where he had served three weeks of a two year sentence.
Fair and cooler conditions continue. Local mountains may see thunderstorms on Sunday. Monday turns dry with higher humidity across the region.
China delivered a direct protest to President Roosevelt over his order imposing a partial embargo on arms shipments to the Far East conflict zone. Ambassador C T Wang discussed potential harm to China’s war efforts with the president while Hull met Roosevelt amid reports of United States involvement with the League of Nations advisory committee.
