Nome Alaska Sept 19 in rain and cold Nome doles out its meager food supply and works to partially rebuild the fire swept city. Damage is placed at 3 000 000 by city officials as homeless seek shelter and aid arrives from federal and territorial agencies.
Senator William E. Borah joins Minidoka county water committee and irrigation district directors in pressing for 102 000 acre feet of water from Jackson Lake. They argue the water was originally allocated to Minidoka and later sold by the government, leading to a shortage. They appeal to Interior Secretary Harold Ickes to supply the claimed water from government holdings under a contract expiration.
Will Rogers writes from Edinburgh praising the country’s beauty and Loch Lomond while noting the Edinburgh show. he apologizes for past dumbness and mentions Queen Mary’s launch next week, sending warm regards from London and Scotland.
Three men charged with internal revenue act violations were released on 1500 bail bonds after arraignments in Twin Falls. Clayton Good year 36 Albert Goodyear 33 brothers were arrested with agents during a raid on a moonshine plant 15 miles south of Twin Falls. A still was destroyed and about 10 gallons of whiskey seized. Thomas Earl Moore 39 of Portland Oregon was also arrested for trafficking in Canadian whiskey labeled 100 proof but tested at 60 proof.
Secretary Swanson announced next summer war maneuvers by the U S fleet in the Puget Sound Alaska Hawaii triangle. The exercises aim to simulate war to prepare the fleet to repel any attack and connect operations near American waters. The fleet moves from Hampton Roads toward the Pacific with stops in Gulf ports and Caribbean waters.
Scores from multiple games show Pittsburgh sweeping Brooklyn 16 to 4 and 4 to 8, Chicago defeating Philadelphia 7 to 4 with strong bats, Cincinnati beating New York 9 to 3, and a rain postponement forcing a doubleheader in St. Louis at Boston.

E F Rinehart the state drought relief administrator ordered an immediate halt to cattle buying under the drought relief program with Bannock county allotments set at eight cars for the week. Five cars have been purchased. Sheep sorting may begin this week in Bannock county with 3000 head to be shipped. Only cattle needing to pay freight and processing costs will be bought. An advisory committee was named at Lava Hot Springs to work with C W Daigh to select distressed flocks and a sorter will be hired by county sheepmen.
Independent school district No. 8 reduced the levy from 22 to 20 mills at a special Monday meeting. Board members cited anticipated higher delinquent tax payments as the reason for the cut.
Aboard US C G Cutter Argo off Newport the third America's Cup race between British challenger Endeavour and defending Rainbow was postponed to tomorrow due to light wind. The sea lay flat with only minor southwest puffs, failing the five and a half hour time limit.

Boise Idaho September 19 The Boise Junior College began its third year today welcoming 180 students. The college emerged two years ago from a local citizens committee after the Episcopal church ceased financial support for a church boarding school. The Utah State Board of Pardons ended sentences for 16 inmates at the state prison in Salt Lake City, parole 22 more, and denied 64 applications at an executive session yesterday.
In Maine riots during a textile strike led to thousands of arrests and a temporary prison complex where 16 women and 112 men were held by national guardsmen. Inmates reported decent meals and care, while some men worried about home consequences. the facility, built overnight near Atlanta, is described as a large, indefinite confinement with no work for detainees.

Shelley Idaho announces the eighth annual Shelley spud day to be held October 3. A. Miller, manager of the event, said at a committee meeting that commercial, seed, certified seed and experimental seed potatoes will be exhibited. Shelley lies in the center producing district.
Waterville Maine September 19 National guardsmen were ordered to duty after the wildest riot in Maine textile strike so far broke out outside the Lockwood Manufacturing mill. Company G 103rd Maine under Captain Kam Mansfield aided local police in a hand to hand clash with pickets at the gates. Four men were arrested as police pursued others implicated.
The textile strike death toll reached 13 with 420000 idle estimated as clashes spread. Ernest K. Riley of Mount Holly North Carolina died from a bayonet wound after pickets rushed troops at Belmont North Carolina. Tear gas and fire hoses dispersed crowds at Spartanburg South Carolina and Little Falls New York.
In Portland, about 100 workers at the Swift & Co plant refused to return to work seeking wage increases shorter hours and union recognition. Another 400 stayed at work as union organizer William L. Swain labeled the killing gangs strike nearly 100 percent in the group. In Des Moines a four and half hour electric strike ended after a conference with Gov. Clyde L. Herring resulting in an agreement between workers and employers.
Denver police mobilize after rumors Nelson and Hamilton may target a 2 million dollar gold shipment to the Denver mint. Chief Albert T. Clark says officers will fight them anywhere and anytime, with riot guns patrolling near the mint after an informant identified the suspects from photos.
