Manila reports a deadly typhoon in Hong Kong with about a thousand lives lost. Twelve ships stranded and twenty four sunk, seven damaged and half of the native craft in port sunk. Wrecks include military barracks and a bishop missing with his launch found bottom up.
Tremendous property loss estimated in the millions as yesterday's typhoon sweeps away sampans and junks, destroys wharves and barracks, and leaves thousands homeless. Many Chinese water dwellers perish, with hundreds drowned on a found launch. The bishop of Victoria, Dr. J C Meare, is missing.
Secretary Taft and Mr Bacon arrive Havana aboard the cruiser Des Moines and later visit President Palma. Alfredo Zayas, Liberal party leader and insurgent delegate, comes aboard the Denver and meets Taft. Talks with Cuban officials and Iberal committee members occur amid cautious diplomacy.
Travana September 1 reported Palma told Taft that a compelled new Cuban election would force his resignation as president.

Police seek kin of John King a stranger from American Falls who died at the county hospital after being removed from a west bound Short Line train. He claimed relatives near Springville Utah and a King girl later found to have married and moved to Bountiful Utah. King died three days after arrival in the city.
