Twin Falls Idaho. City council votes to demand a grand jury investigation into a slot machine extortion scandal after police Sgt Orville Reinoehl was charged with extorting 1000 dollars from cafe owner O A Rambo. The probe may review missing liquor from a 1947 raid and 1947 poker game raids in city jurisdiction.

BLACKFOOT Idaho The Eastern Idaho State fair board said a state law enforcement change of mind forced the closure of race betting. The board claimed prior inquiry and assurances allowed co ownership betting. on day two officials reversed policy, prompting closure of the co ownership windows to aid community benefits from the fair.
UN observer Count Folke Bernadotte, 53, was killed by gunmen in Jerusalem while riding in a UN convoy. Colonel Andre Serot, 53, the chief UN truce observer, also died. The Stern gang is suspected, and tensions flare amid fierce fighting after a renewed truce. Bernadotte had just arrived from Amman en route to Paris to report to the UN assembly.
Lana Turner phoneed MGM to say she expects a baby next April or May and plans to stay in Greenwich, Connecticut with husband Bob Toppling Jr. The star was due back to work on Madame Bovary, while MGM weighs adjusting her honeymoon plans. Turner has a prior child, Cheryl, aged five.
The 16 non operating railroad unions called for an immediate strike vote after wage talks broke off with rail carriers who say the demands would bankrupt the roads. The unions seek 40 hour weeks with no pay cut and a 25 cent hourly raise, plus overtime on weekends and holidays.

Senator Glen Taylor Progressive party candidate for vice president will end his cross country tour with a November 1 statewide radio broadcast from Pocatello. Fred Marchant and Helen McCannon announced plans as they met campaign leaders in five north central counties.
The Community Chest of Pocatello opened its drive office in the Hotel Bannock lobby with 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours. Budget set at 45000 dollars, approved September 14 by the executive committee. Drive chairman C Ed Flandro and co chairmen Stan Day Harold Dry optimistic of meeting the goal as advance gifts begin October 1 and the full campaign starts October 25. Bannock County profited by five miles of newly surfaced road as part of Idaho’s $355 000 construction in the last month. Drainage structures and a gravel surface were completed on the Grace Turner secondary road. Most funds were spent on flood damaged north Idaho roads, say public works officials.
