The Senate adopted the first committee amendment to the tariff bill by 40 to 32 requiring nearly all imported goods to bear a country of origin mark, with six Republicans joining Democrats. In Hayward California on September 17 Joe Cataldi, 70, a fruit buyer, shot and killed Officer George Vierra and wounded Constable Al La Chuna during a two hour standoff. Cataldi, intoxicated, fired from his home after shooting at his wife who fled. Tear bombs failed to end the siege until Cataldi surrendered.
Albert Lischosky a Polish adventurer self styled count abandoned his battle against deportation and said he would drop charges accusing police and prison officials in California of stealing thousands of dollars.
National League games show Brooklyn and Chicago split results with late runs. Detroit Chicago and St Louis Philadelphia fixtures hit delays and postponements due to rain. American League features Detroit against Washington rained out and Boston beating Chicago in extra innings.
