The president's emergency fact finding board opened hearings in Chicago on the railroads wage dispute with 1,260,000 workers. It aims to file a formal report by November 1. Workers seek higher wages and vacation. carriers push for wage restraint.
Milwaukee Senate reports describe the American Legion parade with 50 000 participants and a convention program on September 16 1940 as Legion officials outline hearings under the railway labor act. Morse sets October 18 deadline for hearings and 30 day strike delay.
The occupying Free French authorities proclaimed Syria's independence today and named Sheikh Tajeddine Hassani as the first president of the republic. Separately, President Roosevelt announced steps to speed lend lease operations by cutting red tape but did not specify if the navy would convoy war materials overseas. Also reported are rescues near Yellowstone Lake by park rangers and Idaho State fair prize winners, with Bannock county and Black Rock entries receiving numerous blue, red, white and pink ribbons.
Two Seattle men, Conrad P. Opitz Jr. 29 and Clarence E. Hale 39, died on a steep Sourdough mountain trail after a weekend hiking trip. Weather was sleet and fog as a party of four was separated. Hale found Opitz and his wife, Hale collapsed while trying to free Opitz. A rescue party reached them to find both men dead.
Ezra Fieldsted secretary of the Ogden chamber and former Pocatello chamber secretary visited the fair. He served as a judge at the night horse show and rated this year’s fair as the best in the intermountain country. Pjeldsted, a former Blackfoot resident, also hails from the region.
Idaho motorists push 60 mph on roads designed for 40 to 50 mph says Law Enforcement J L Balderston. He notes weather conditions, tension on drivers, and says action is needed as highways are built for longer periods while car speeds rise yearly.

Idaho Southern University starts freshman guidance days with psychological exams in Swanson hall and English placement testing. Freshmen attend group conferences, individual conferences, and campus activities as dormitories reopen and NYA employment limits apply.
The United States and Haiti signed an agreement to furnish lend-lease items valued at 1.1 million dollars for Haitian defense. Repayment will be made by shipments of Haitian products to the United States, including rubber sugar cocoa and fibers. A joint air field near Port au Prince supports Caribbean defense cooperation.
New bread ration cards, which distributors paid for, were issued in Rome today. Use of the cards is expected to begin October 1.
The United States Atlantic fleet will guard all lease load cargoes en route to Iceland, starting at 12 01 a m, as convoy duty begins along a 2000 mile North Atlantic stretch. The move shifts risks from Iceland to protect British and allied shipping while American merchantmen may carry arms to parts of the British empire. Under Secretary Knox orders place the fleet of about 125 warships led by Texas New York and Arkansas.
National League results show St Louis 10 over New York 0 and Brooklyn 0 Cincinnati 1 with Kimball Owen and others contributing. Boston loses to Chicago 2 3 1 as Javery Passeau and Scheffing star. American League St Louis edges Philadelphia 4 1. Detroit blanked by Washington 3 0 0 0 with Rowe Tebbetts Chase Evans pitching. Only games scheduled.
The Pocatello Bundles for Britain unit holds its regular semimonthly meeting Tuesday evening September 16 at 7 30 at the Bannock hotel. Full attendance is urged as fall and winter plans are discussed and all interested persons are invited.
German authorities in the Hague order confiscation of all property of living members of the House of Orange and Nassau led by Queen Wilhelmina, who is in exile in Britain.
In Pocatello a playful note introduces Jack Frost with a forecast of fair today and tonight. It lists a high of 67 and a 33 low, noting no precipitation and a ten degree dip below normal. The piece mentions six inches of snow in Yellowstone yesterday and rising temperatures ahead.
Bannock county winds up its day in the sun at the Eastern Idaho state fair in Blackfoot. A 7:15 p.m. show features Palominos and other horses with Ezra Fielsted announcing and Kenneth Skeley judging. An 8:30 p.m. “Music on Wings” extravaganza closes the evening, with a 1 p.m. matinee and a full lineup of horse acts, bands, and relay races tomorrow.
J Leland Bartley of the alcohol tax unit announced rules for issuing permits to manufacture wine for family use. Production is limited to 200 gallons per year tax free. operations must be registered five days before starting and renewed yearly. Permits are required each vintage and may be obtained by contacting the Seattle or Boise offices or the Idaho Pocatello unit.
The MIA program begins tonight at 8 p m in the church with Rose Cordon singing, Cecilli Chambers on violin, Watson school of dance numbers, Dale Parrett on trumpet, and Coree Copening reading. Mrs A B Chase directs. Dancing and refreshments follow. Rose Cordon and Clive Cooper are readers.
German reports claim a major victory on the Leningrad front routing 18 Soviet divisions. Paris executions respond to attacks by hostages. an additional German soldier wounded. RAF aircraft mass over the Dover Strait striking at German-occupied France as Eckert notes continued Dnieper advances.
Paris reports reveal General Heinrich von Studenengel announced ten more hostages were shot in reprisal for attacks on German army men. The executions raise the total to 13 officially announced. Attacks on Sept 6 10 and 11 triggered the wave as Germans promised further reprisals.
Study by Rolland J Delafauss and Mrs Delafauss, graduates of the University of Vermont, arrive to spend four months in Pocatello. They partner with Ben E Lewis of Utah on a city and county government project under the Alfred P Sloan foundation. They are University of Denver graduates planning an exhaustive survey of municipal and county operations in Pocatello and Bannock county, with Sloan projects nationwide.
