President Hoover appeals to Americans to back private relief groups as he outlines four aims. He calls for feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless, maintaining benevolent agencies for care and hospitalization, mobilizing local resources, and safeguarding liberties. Continued on Page Five.
President Hoover reads a 700 word statement opposing immediate cash payment of adjusted service certificates. He argues the plan would harm 21 million families and stall national recovery, noting the $2.3 billion price tag and that funds are not available. The message, delivered to the American Legion convention in Portland, stresses justice to veterans must yield to the public welfare.
In New York a court hearing over when to elect a new mayor after James J. Walker's resignation hints at a November 8 vote. Tammany Hall and Socialists push for November elections while McKee seeks to define his hold until January’s year end. Walker’s Tammany ties contrast with McKee’s non-Tammany Democrat alignment.

Mrs. Mattie Crabtree hobbling from England Arkansas to Oklahoma City pleaded for her son Frank held on counterfeiting. The federal grand jury returned a no bill and formed a purse to send mother and son home.
An unidentified woman about 40 years old died instantly and 15 passengers were injured when a New York to Scranton bus sideswiped a standing truck on the road between Delaware and Bridgeville. One bus side was sliced off and no one aboard escaped injury.
Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for president, urges workers to support the Socialist program to curb unemployment and avoid fascism. He argues that Socialists can win when workers act on hope, not fear, and that voting Socialist builds a movement pressuring both old parties to meet demands.
Sacramento investigators identify a body found in a slough as Dorothy Millette once known as Mrs Paul Bern. Coroner Garlick says the deceased likely jumped from a river steamer on September 7, two days after Paul Bern shot himself in Beverly Hills. The will names Jean Harlow as beneficiary of Berns estate.
M I Thompson began his third term as president of the Utah State Federation of Labor after acclamations at the Salt Lake City convention closing session. Ogden was named for the 1933 convention city. Officers mostly reelected. the body adopted resolutions denouncing Hoover over the bonus march incident and endorsing the Democratic platform and pro labor candidates.
Will Rogers comments from Beverly Hills reflect on Maine politics and the national mood. He references Maine going sane as a bellwether, mentions prior Democratic import for fairs, and notes reactions from Hoover and Roosevelt amid the heated campaign.
At the American Legion convention in Portland on September 15, a roll call vote backed immediate cash bonus for soldiers by 1,167 to 109. Oklahoma and Texas leaders predict a nine to one vote against the President while a Michigan candidate argues the issue harms the economy. The Legion backs a bigger defense force and opposes Soviet recognition and war debt cancelation.
Two locals are in county and city jails as investigators press on the Volkmeier bombing and shooting case. Federal and other authorities join local police in pursuing leads, with the two men denying involvement and remaining in custody for questioning. Volkmeier's condition improves as the investigation continues.
Senator George Hunt urged forming a business group to set living wages and fair prices with reasonable profits. He spoke at the Pocatello Rotary Club luncheon, chaired by Walter H. Cleare. University music provided entertainment by Kenneth and Melvin Dunn with an encore from Melvin Dunn. District Governor Roy C Davidson of Burley attended.
