The program centers on a boy’s relation to home, school and church, with much of the talks by the youths themselves and several noted speakers.
Chicago dispatch reports Alvin T. Hert western Republican campaign manager says Maine’s returns show Republicans and Progressives united and predict victory in November. The Maine result signals support for a Republican Senate and Charles Evans Hughes in the White House. Senator Walsh declined to comment on early returns.
Probate court in St. Paul reported a preliminary inventory of James J. Hill estate showing Minnesota holdings near 40 million dollars. The filing estimates an inheritance tax of about 1.26 million dollars.
Denver reports show George A. Carlson defeats Samuel D. Nicholson for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in yesterday’s primary. Carlson 15 596 Nicholson 14 913 from 390 of 2875 precincts. Nicholson carried Denver by a slight majority.
Columbia South Carolina September 13 Governor Richard I Manning leads with near complete unofficial returns defeating former Governor Cole L Blease in the gubernatorial nomination race according to the latest tabulations from Columbia.
Tomorrow a $300000 bond election will fund the water plant extension and completion. Polls open 9 am to 7 pm at five ward locations. A Civic Club meeting tonight will explain the measure and urge vote for bonds to secure water facilities and a projected $40000 yearly net income for Potatello.
The county commissioners completed the official Republican vote count with the following winners: State Senator Wm H Mendenhall. State Representatives D J Elrod G W Gray Swen F Johnson. County Commissioners EH Beckstead George Gittins Charles S West. Sheriff George E Mabey. Treasurer Ida M Bistline. Probate Judge William A Hyde. School Superintendent Bertha L Atkin. Assessor Lucius B R Case. Coroner J C Arnout. Surveyor Oscar Sonnenkalb. Prosecuting Attorney N E Ray. Close counts included Mabey over Hartvigsen by 18 votes and Ray over Bacon by 522.
A crowd of colored workers clashed at a Blackfoot pool hall run by Brock Jones. Jones was killed by a chest shot, Charles Caldwell was slashed, and two others, W H Bell Grace Potter, and white man R C Morin, await investigation in jail. Jones had prior police court appearances and a bootlegging charge against his wife.
New York reports on the bitter street railway strike with Interborough Rapid Transit leaders rejecting arbitration and vowing to operate on the current terms. Police guard elevated trains while congestion worsens. Hugh Frayne says 12 000 to 20 000 will join the parade tomorrow.
Sheriff Cooper and deputies plus Officer Garbett and Revelare detectives raided clubs and homes in the north of Center street area. Ten men arrested on charges of selling intoxicating liquor in a prohibition district with several detainees released on bond for preliminary hearings.
Miss Ladavine Miller and her brother J Marion Miller were sentenced to one to ten years each for swindling Thomas Foulkes of Danbury Iowa. Judge Fitch overruled the motion in arrest of judgment. Foulkes lost 11312 and two farms worth 40000 in the affair. He testified Miller gave him a Bible and told him to marry a rich widow in California.
Dr. Krump Heller Mexican envoy traveling to Switzerland was forced by Britain to cross the Atlantic three times before landing. His credentials were interfered with as British boarding parties seized and opened his papers and baggage and sent him back. Britain claimed Heller carried messages from the United States to Germany.
President Wilson departed aboard the naval yacht Mayflower from New London for Sandy Hook en route to Long Branch. He learned his sister Mrs Anna E Howe may not live long but cannot recognize him while he plans conferences with Democratic leaders this week.
