Louis P. Lochner describes how the Siegfried line was designed to withstand air attacks and artillery. The system uses bulkhead style gaps, staggered units, and deep concrete fortifications, with traps of barbed wire and mines and protruding blocks to resemble dragon teeth.
Heavy irrigation demand in the upper Snake River valley has dried the river at Blackfoot. Water from Jackson Lake reservoir is released and should reach Blackfoot soon. Water rights filled for July 10, 1880 and June 10, 1890 were restored, while Jackson Lake and American Falls reservoir levels fell.
A reform push aims to tidy the American college girl with new neat fashion. Designers and stores push tailored suits and glamor for off campus wear while school days keep jeans and sweaters. Trends show gray flannel suits, plaid wools, and long stockings cap with cloche hats. loafers and ghillies for campus, pumps for evenings.
The House passed and sent to the White House a bill authorizing the agriculture department to conduct various insect and disease control programs. These programs have been carried on for many years on a temporary basis.

Idaho Falls Bonneville county commissioners named Robert W. Geisler deputy sheriff for nearly a year to fill the sheriff vacancy created by Harry Meppen’s resignation. Geisler’s term ends the second Monday in January 1945 and he will stand against Dean Wilkie in November for the two year sheriff term.
Allied actions push toward Austria and Germany as Luxembourg frontier cross and East Prussia entries signal turning tide. The piece notes 12 million foreign slave laborers and POWs as potential internal destabilizers and cites birthdays celebrated at the USO hut in Pocatello for soldiers in England and the South Pacific.
At Mobile Bay's eastern shore a fish jubi lee washed ashore feeding residents and visitors. Thousands of pounds of flounder crabs and shrimp were gathered along the Daphne shoreline after waters churned white. Locals attribute the event to a rare mix of fresh river water from the Tensas tributaries with Gulf salt water.
The submarine Gudgeon with about 65 crew is overdue and presumed lost. This adds to 29 submarines lost since the war began, with four losses in non-operational missions. The 31-year-old skipper Lieut. Comdr. Robert A. Bonin is listed as missing in action.
Idaho liquor stores will shut for 24 hours or more once news of Germany's fall becomes public. The report notes Russia suffered the most casualties in World War I.
