Clark Sees Draft Bill Evasion By House Amendment

The chamber of deputies proclaimed Manuel Avila Camacho winner of the July 7 election, defeating Gen. Juan Andreau Almazan and Francisco Sanchez Tapia. Avila Camacho gains the support of the Cardenas administration as Almazan flees, with vote totals of 2,476,641 to 151,101 and 9,840 for Sanchez Tapia.

Fire Season Ends in Idaho After Mild Summer

State Forester Franklin Girard declared the north Idaho fire season practically over after a summer with smaller timber losses. He said week of rains eroded remaining fire hazards across the Clearwater region Priest Lake area and Coeur d Alene district following an inspection tour through the panhandle.

Idaho Youth Victim of Rail Accident

Positive identification was announced of Ronald Buck a 13 year old Idaho youth crushed in a rail car near Provo Utah. Sheriff John S Evans said densification came from Sherman McDonald 16 who rode with Buck on a hitchhiking trip and both were in the Salt Lake City detention home. Buck left the home last Friday.

Bannock county 4-H fair opens Friday at Lava Hot Springs and runs to Saturday night with one of the county’s largest fairs. W. D. Boyle says cooperation and a full program of entertainment accompany exhibits, judging, and demonstrations for girl and boy club members.

Whitaker Severes Arteries in Jail Attempt

H A Whitaker 31 is in serious condition at General Hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by cutting his wrists with a safety razor in the county jail where he is held awaiting a preliminary hearing on an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Deputies found him in a pool of blood and moved him to hospital as details awaited confirmation. The sheriff says he was jailed after threatening his wife and was held on a $500 bond.

Fire destroys Northern hotel in Billings. guests escape

A blaze gutted the four story Northern hotel in Billings Montana causing $600000 in damages. Norman Thomas socialist candidate for president and 75 guests escaped unharmed as flames rose from the basement and two walls collapsed. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson had stayed there previously.

Munitions Plant Explosions Kill and Injure Dozens at Hercules Site

In Kenvil New Jersey two blasts at the Hercules Powder plant unleashed fires and eight further blasts. At least 11 workers were confirmed dead and about 200 injured as ambulances rushed victims to hospitals in Dover Newton Morristown Newark and Montclair. ABA Ties Third Term Resolutions at National Convention

At the 63rd annual American Bar Association meeting in Philadelphia the body voted 217 to 126 to table all resolutions on a presidential third term. Harry Knight of Sunbury Pa read a denouncement of a Roosevelt third term, sponsored by Bailly of New York Morrison of Bristol Pa and Ruzika of Baltimore. The motion was described as scandalous and improper by Clarence Goodwin. Beardsley as ABA president ruled the tabling applied to all third term resolutions.

CCC Youth Tries to Break Out of Hypnotic Trance

In Ogden a CCC enrollee known as Alfred Glass from Winnemucca New Mexico claimed a woman muttered him into a hypnotic trance after visiting an Ogden cafe. He was jailed as railroad police investigate and a CCC physician from Salt Lake City is to examine him.

Suspect Gurino Seeks Protection After Run to Church

Vito Socks Gurino, 33, a key figure in a murder mob inquiry, fled to the Shrine of the Sea church in New York and pleaded for protection. He was charged with suspicion of homicide in the Jan 6, 1939 killings of two plasterers. Gurino cried that killers were on his trail and warned he would not squeal. He named the ring’s top man and resisted questioning, requiring an ambulance during police lineup attempts. His wife and children were threatened he said.

State Orders Elk Shoot in Bannock Preserve

Bannock County Sportsmen's Association voted almost unanimously to remove 150 elk from the Pocatello game preserve, with 100 from the area near Pocatello and 50 north of Malad. Dates set for November 17 to 21. Forage is worst on record and damage to nearby farms continues.
